"The eyes indicate the antiquity of the soul"
                                                                                    --- Raplh Waldo Emerson

BEAUTY LIES WITHIN IN THE INNER COMPLEXITY OF ONES SOUL THROUGH THE JOURNEY OF STORYTELLING THROUGH ONES EYES. ((of course the above is according to me..:) )) By a simple look eyes can provoke emotions of  love, fear, hurt, sense of despair, etc. I paint a story of inner emotions when I focus on faces...especially the eyes....That's why its one of my favourite things to draw. Once I explain the parts of an eye you will see how challenging it is to draw or understand the complexity of an eye.

In this picture my objective is to highlight the sadness,
despair, & loss of hope in his EYES by using dark colors on the
skin so that the gold color (lightest color) in the iris & pupil can
out shine the rest of the face. Furthermore, the glare of
white flash and the impact gives impression that the boy
 is holding in tears.

  • When using color or charcoal its always important to go from dark paint colors TO lights OR from dark shading to light. WHITE & BLACK ARE ESSENTIAL PAINT COLORS
  • A variety of shades of the same color will add depth, texture, and perspective to a picture
  • AT TIMES ADDING DIFFERENT COMPLEMENTARY COLORS WHEN THE IMAGE IS DRY CAN ADD AN OUTER GLOW TO THE IMAGE (this will be seen in upcoming posts) If adding fresh color after a finishing gloss has been applied it is difficult to work with due to the fact that the paint will dry to quickly and it will be hard to smooth or smudge.
  • Sometimes un common art tools can have the best results in a picture eg: Kleenex to smooth small spaces, a plastic fork to make lines for eyebrows & hair, your nail or the but of a paintbrush to create thick or thin rigid edges...try to experiment on your own
  • When drawing eyes the distance between is always one eye width

/// My Version ///

In this picture my objective is to highlight THE BEAUTY
.                      OF AN EYE.... I want to point out how in an iris and pupil
you can have multiple colors (dark green, olive green, dark brown,
caramel brown, and gold) that fade into one another....it
                        almost looks like a masterpiece.

The QUESTION LEFT IS WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF AN EYE ??????

  • Iris (Big circle)
  • Pupil (Smallest circle within in the big one)
  • Catchlight (or flash) (white area fading)
  • White part of the eye (x2)
  • Upper lash line (thick shape above the eye)                            = 11 PARTS
  • Lower lid thickness (thin line below the eye)
  • Upper eyelid (line above the eyelashes)
  • Corner eye membrane (x2) (two pieces at the left corner of the eye)
  • Eyebrow

"I shut my eyes in order to see"
                                                                        -- Paul Gauguin

BLACK & WHITE is another form of art technique that I use often to create beauty in simplicity with the images that I draw. Monotone color = FIVE STAGES OF BLACK. BLACKS CAN ALSO BE USED WITH OTHER COLOR.....!!!!!!

FIVE SHADES OF SHADING:

Blac Dark Gray Mid GrayLight Gray White

#1-B/ #2-DG/ #3- MG/ #4-LG/ #5-W

Cast shadow: used in the creases & where the crease begins
Shadow edge: cast shadow blends into shadow edge (light tone)
Full light: White area

This picture is created by using compressed charcoal and oil paints

By combining charcoal and oil paints the fruits POP! due to the fact that they are bright and it is the only two solid colors that appear in the picture......the fruits are outlined by black which makes they GLOW!
These effects add a sense of realism to the elements in the picture

BLACK AND WHITE PHOTO

Original

My version

  • Cast shadow (darkest part of light) that outlines the image or area eg; around the arm and face itself there is a reflected light of dark black...allowing me to emphasizes on the the features of the face
  • Shadow area:(dark gray) medium gray that can be seen following the darkest black eg; the shoulder edge, around the chin, the nose, & in between the strands of hair
  • Ful light:  (white) all white areas........which are they?
  • Halftone: (midgray) a light gray that is lighter than dark gray found in the strands of hair.....seeing how this is the 3rd tone of shading elements

At times when following a picture it is hard to follow all of these rules but if you can pick out certain features allowing you to include these basics in your picture.....even if you decide to ignore these rules it doesn't matter have fun

(BACK PICTURE)

WHAT I PICKED OUT:

--There is a split of color between the top, middle, and last layer of  hair
                                  TOP: sDRK
                                   MIDDLE: MID GRAY
                                   BOTTOM:

--- Around the strands of hair as well as the edges of the
shoulder there is a glowing light =  dark gray

----The strands of hair that are separate are close to the light gray
color especially the tips of the hair strand

--- The check color is a tone below skin tone (almost white) than the
color seen on the nose, mouth, and chin area
